Know the Signs

Thumping at dusk? Six signs it’s a possum

Possums are heavy and busy after dark. If you hear footsteps rather than quick scurrying, it is almost always a possum.

01

Heavy thumping at dusk and dawn

Footsteps like a small cat as the possum heads out to feed after dark and comes back before sunrise.

02

Scratching in the ceiling

Scratching and shuffling near the eaves or above a bedroom, mostly at night.

03

Droppings in the roof or gutter

Pellet droppings in the roof cavity, in the gutter or on the path under the roofline.

04

Stains and a strong smell

Brown urine stains on the ceiling and an ammonia smell that sits in one room.

05

Flattened insulation

Torn or flattened insulation and nesting material when you look into the roof cavity.

06

Seen on the roofline

A possum on the fence, the gutter or a branch touching the roof after dark.

Know Your Visitor

The two possums that move into Melbourne roofs

Both are native, both are protected by law, and each needs a slightly different approach. Knowing which one you have helps us fix the problem faster.

The Noisy One

Common Brushtail Possum

Trichosurus vulpecula

About the size of a cat, with a big bushy tail and a heavy footstep you can hear through the ceiling. Brushtails are solitary and territorial, and a warm, dry roof void is prime real estate for them. The thumping at dusk and before dawn is their commute.

  • Heavy thumps and slow footsteps at night
  • Usually one animal using one main entry point
The Quiet One

Common Ringtail Possum

Pseudocheirus peregrinus

Smaller and quieter, often mistaken for a rat. Ringtails live in family groups, so where there is one there are usually several, nesting in wall cavities and dense insulation. They also need a specific permit to handle, which makes professional help essential.

  • Lighter scurrying, often several animals
  • Cannot be trapped without a DEECA permit

Possums are protected by law. Here is what that means for you.

Under the Wildlife Act 1975, every possum in Victoria is a protected native animal. Killing, injuring or moving one without authority is a criminal offence, and the rules are stricter than most homeowners realise:

  • A trapped brushtail must be released within 50 metres, on the same property, the same evening. Taking it to a park or another street is illegal.
  • Ringtail possums cannot be trapped or handled at all without a specific permit from DEECA.
  • That is why one way doors and proofing are the correct long term fix. The possum leaves on its own, stays in its home range and simply cannot get back into your roof.

Three weeks of thumping over our bedroom before we called. Json found the entry over the box gutter, fitted the one way door that afternoon and sent photos of everything sealed two days later. The first full night of sleep felt unreal. Could not fault the communication.

Another company wanted to trap and take the possum away, which I later learned is illegal. Json explained the law, installed the one way door and meshed the whole roofline properly. Watching the videos on the website first is what sold me, and the real thing matched.

Turned out our scratching was rats, not a possum. Instead of charging us for the wrong job, he identified it on the spot and sorted the rodent treatment the same visit. Honest, tidy and the price he quoted on the phone was the price we paid.

Questions

Possum questions, answered straight

Every roof is different, so pricing depends on the size of the property, how many entry points need sealing and how accessible the roofline is. That is why we start with an inspection and give you a fixed, itemised quote before any work begins. The price we quote is the price you pay, with no call-out fees and no hidden extras. Call 1300 360 301 or send the form for your personalised quote.
Timing and weight are the giveaways. A few heavy thumps just after dusk and again before dawn usually mean a brushtail possum heading out to feed and coming home. Light, fast scratching on and off through the night points to rats or mice. It matters because the treatments are completely different and possums are protected by law. We identify the animal first, and if it turns out to be rodents we handle that too.
No, and this catches a lot of people out. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 a trapped possum must be released within 50 metres of where it was caught, on the same property, on the same evening. Taking it to a park or another suburb is illegal and usually a death sentence for the possum, because they rarely survive outside their own territory. One way doors and proofing solve the problem legally and permanently.
We fit a small one way exit over the possum’s main entry point. That night the possum pushes out through it to go feeding, exactly as normal, but the door only swings one way so it cannot get back in. Once we are sure the roof is empty, we remove the door and seal that final opening. The possum stays safe in its home range and your roof stays yours.
Not through anything we have sealed. Possums are territorial and will absolutely try, which is why removal without proofing is a waste of money. We seal every entry point with galvanised mesh and weatherproof materials, exactly like the jobs in our videos, and back the proofing with a written guarantee. If one gets back in through an area we sealed, we return and fix it at no charge.
Same day in most Melbourne suburbs if you call before midday, and we run weekends too. Possum jobs are usually booked and completed within a day or two of your first call, weather permitting, since some roof work cannot be done safely in the rain.
Completely. Possum work is mechanical, not chemical. One way doors, mesh and sealant, with no poisons or baits involved at all. Where we also treat rodents, we only use approved products inside tamper resistant stations that children and pets cannot open.
We clean it up. Possum urine and droppings in the roof void smell, damage insulation and can attract the next animal. Nesting material is removed, the area is sanitised and an odour treatment is applied so your roof does not advertise itself as a vacant home.
You can buy one, but it only works if it sits on the main entry and every other gap is sealed at the same time. Miss a gap and the possum simply finds another way back in. We fit the door, seal every secondary gap and put a written guarantee on the sealed areas.
We are open 7 days, 7am to 9pm, and we have an urgent line for after-hours jobs. Call 1300 360 301 and we will tell you the earliest time we can be there.
Yes. We find it, remove it, clean and deodorise the area, and seal the entry point so it does not happen again. See our dead animal removal service.
Yes. Json Pest Control Melbourne is licensed and insured, and every possum job is carried out in line with the Wildlife Act 1975.
