Under the Wildlife Act 1975, every possum in Victoria is a protected native animal. Killing, injuring or moving one without authority is a criminal offence, and the rules are stricter than most homeowners realise:
- A trapped brushtail must be released within 50 metres, on the same property, the same evening. Taking it to a park or another street is illegal.
- Ringtail possums cannot be trapped or handled at all without a specific permit from DEECA.
- That is why one way doors and proofing are the correct long term fix. The possum leaves on its own, stays in its home range and simply cannot get back into your roof.
